Brew Pub Opportunity - Microbrewery

Are you looking for a brew pub?  This could be the ideal way of running your own pub and brewery by taking over an existing business resulting from a retirement sale.   In the brewers own words:

Hi, I'm Andy Pickering, I own and operate the oldest brewpub combining the second oldest brewery in South Yorkshire based near Doncaster.

I have run the place for 30 years and on reaching 60, I have decided to semi-retire.
I am freehold so I could sell the equipment and premises but would prefer to see someone else carry it on if that were feasible.
I wouldn't be looking for a prohibitive rent ( if that were to be a better option than sale) as I appreciate the difficulties faced, but for fresh people with new ideas I am convinced there is an opportunity  superior to the usual model of renting premises on an industrial estate, investing heavily in equipment and six months down the line looking desperately for an outlet, we have them all rolled into one.  There would need to be some changes to bring things to a more modern spec, I would assume there would be scope for profitable benefits all round.

If you are interested in a chat. please drop me a line.  I can best be contacted on the current email address:

Portugal's largest craft beer brewery

One of the great things about running Brew-School apart from meeting lots of interesting and lovely brewers is that you get an opportunity to inspire and inform some fantastic new brewing businesses.  Take for instance Portugal's newest and biggest craft beer brewery located in the Portuguese capital Lisbon called MUSA.  I've included an image to their new brewery looking very shiny and new.

I'm sure this brewery will help put craft brewing on the map in Portugal which has no real history of craft beer production and has like many countries had to rely on pretty moribund beer from a couple of massive mainstream breweries.   Paulo who came on our course back in October 2015 in his own words:
Dear Julie and Chris,

It has elapsed more than one year since I attended your fantastic courses. They were key for my beer project. Thank you!

After several months of hard work we managed to get our new and shiny brewery ready for firing up. Please find attached a high resolution photo of our brewery in Lisbon ready to start brewing. Please let me know if you ever visit Lisbon. It will be nice to invite you for a freshly brewed beer directly from the tanks. Paulo
So if you do ever find yourself in Lisbon the brewery is located on:
Rua do Açucar, 83 in the "arts neighborhood" of Marvila in Lisbon

General Certificate of Brewing Course - Success

The first ever General Certificate of Brewing Course took place at Brew-School in Bakewell at the start of October.  The five day course with expert brewer Tim O'Rouke was a huge success with a bevie of 20 brewers from across the country and as far as Portugal looking to refine their brewing knowledge and also prepare themselves to take the exam with the Institute of Brewing and Distilling (IBD).

The course which mixed brewing theory with brewery visits to Thornbridge Brewery in Bakewell and Brampton Brewery in Chesterfield to see the different styles of brewing within a small and medium sized microbreweries.  It was a fascinating insight into how you can brew on a very small commercial scale with a 9 barrel plant purchase for £50,000 brewing only 3 time a weel but also with a regional scale brewery employing the latest brewing techniques including a centrifuge to filter the bottled and cask conditioned beer.

As well as covering an extensive syllabus required to sit the exam for the General Certificate of Brewing there was plenty of opportunities for people to explore all aspects of the brewing process.  There emerged very interesting differences in brewing practice from the brewers at St. Austell to some of the smaller brewers in the micros .  It was also interesting listening to some of the attendees looking at setting up their own microbrewery and how they viewed the process.  Over the 5 days our brewers looked at the following topics:

MONDAY
Beer Styles * Malting * Adjuncts * Mash Conversion * Milling * Mash separation

TUESDAY
Wort Boiling * Fermentation theory * Fermentation principles * Brewing yeast

WEDNESDAY
Beer maturation & Cold storage * Beer Prep Bright Beer * Beer Quality & process
Beer Flavour

THURSDAY
Microbiology * Quality Systems * Cleaning Detergents * CIP * Water & Effluent

FRIDAY
Process gases * Environment * Exam techniques

On top of the theory there was a lot of fun.  We had several evening events consisting of a beer matching and tasting event looking at beer styles and how they compliment different food types.

Thursday was rounded off with a Gala Dinner in Rileys in Bakewell.  Four courses of stunning locally inspired food all paired with beers from local brewing legend Thornbridge Brewery.
