Looking at setting up a microbrewery?

If you look at the fall out in the brewing industry the latest brewing news shows how important pubs are to the survival of microbreweries.  You only have to scan the latest brewing news headlines to discover that Marstons has had to join forces with Carlsberg and cede control of their brewing interests to effectively save their pubs.  The impact of the brewing merger which will create a £780 million pound brewing heavy weight which may not be good for brewing jobs but good for the new microbrewery business that will access to Marstons estate of pubs and restaurants.  For time in memorial brewers have been inextricably linked to pubs and visa virsa.  This deal recognises the commercial realities that all microbreweries need a route to market for their beers.

Should brewers be looking at leasing pub?

Every microbrewery needs a pub/micropub and at the very least a tap room.  The financial attraction of having a way of directly selling your beer direct to the consumer rather than through the trade is a must for any microbrewery looking to set up.  The commercial logic is clear that the brewery can make double margins on their beer as both the producer and then the pub retailer.  If you are looking at setting up a microbrewery then I would consider leasing a pub at the same time or in association with another party.

Beer Brewing Course - BRISTOL (Brew-School goes on tour)

Beer brewing we all know is the new rock'n'roll.  Brew-School is now taking it's acclaimed all grain beer brewing courses to Bristol in the West Country and going on tour in September away from it's Bakewell HQ for the first time.

Portugal's largest craft beer brewery

One of the great things about running Brew-School apart from meeting lots of interesting and lovely brewers is that you get an opportunity to inspire and inform some fantastic new brewing businesses.  Take for instance Portugal's newest and biggest craft beer brewery located in the Portuguese capital Lisbon called MUSA.  I've included an image to their new brewery looking very shiny and new.

I'm sure this brewery will help put craft brewing on the map in Portugal which has no real history of craft beer production and has like many countries had to rely on pretty moribund beer from a couple of massive mainstream breweries.   Paulo who came on our course back in October 2015 in his own words:

Wine maker diversifying into craft beer

There has been a trend recently of some of the small wine and spirit producers diversifying into the craft beer market.  The latest wine producer to move into the brewing market under their sub-brand of Curious Drinks is Chapel Down based in Kent.

New Funding For Breweries

The new funds will be used to build a brewery and visitor attraction and incentives were offered to potential funders including discounts on the cost of the firms beer.  Chapel Down are not the only brewery to tap the buoyant crowd funding route to raising funds for their brewery but are unusual in the respect that they have a wine making heritage.  Other recent crowd funding for breweries were the Aaran Brewery who also used the funds to build a visitor centre and acquire other property assets such as a hotel and pubs.  The trend for crowdfunding was pioneered by another Scottish Brewery Brewdog and the rest as they say is history. A recent example of a Brew-School graduate Nick Farr has also used crowd funding to finance his expansion into a commercial brewing operation down in Harpenden bringing a brewery back to the area for the first time in just under a hundred years.

Brew-School launches NEW courses in 2015

Brew-School based in Bakewell has just launched a range of new brewing courses for 2015 aimed at enhancing peoples understanding of the practical brewing process.  The 5 day practical brewing course is an internationally recognised qualification accredited through the Institute of Brewing & Distilling leading to the Certificate in Brewing.

Brew-School now offers a number of options for brewers looking to set up their own Mircrobrewery.  Courses are available for 2, 3 and 7 day courses depending on the amount of practical brewing that attendees have undertaken.  The new 7 day setting up a microbrewery course combines a practical understanding of brewing on a commercial scale with an examination of the commercial considerations any brewer needs to go through before setting up their own micro.

For microbrewers who are already brewing , there is a new one day course that looks at the importance of branding, social media, marketing and packaging in creating a winning beer brand.

All courses are practical, informal and participatory but taught by experts in the industry who want to share their experience and knowledge.
